Are you looking for a new adventure? Discover Lafayette, Colorado in the southeastern of Boulder County. It is bordered by the city of Erie to the north and east, Broomfield to the east and south, and Louisville to the southwest. US Highway 287 is the city’s main road, heading north to Longmont and south to Brumfield and Denver. Route 7 runs from Lafayette to Brighton in the east and Boulder in the west. There is also an exit into the city from Highway 25.
In 1888, Lafayette was founded by Mary E. Miller whose husband’s name, Lafayette Miller, went to live in this area in Colorado, thus, named after him. They used the land they owned to farm and later on moved to Boulder with their entire family. When Lafayette Miller died in 1878, Mary returned to the farm with their six children. 37acres were designated to be the town of Lafayette in honor of Mary’s late husband.
Lafayette was then incorporated on April 2, 1889. It remained a coal-mining town despite the various failed mining businesses in the past. The nationwide strike was marked by the Ludlow Massacre by the National Guard against the families of miners in the southern coal belt near Trinidad, Colorado in 1913.
In 1898, only 5% of the coal mined at Lafayette was used to heat homes. The remainder was used in Denver power plants, manufacturers, and steam locomotives. Lafayette’s last mine, Black Diamond, closed in 1956. You can still see some of the coal mining tools at Lafayette’s Miner’s Museum.
